Tromsø Airport, Langnes is the largest airport in northern Norway and the main aerial gateway to the Norwegian Arctic — a role that has intensified as Tromsø has become one of Europe's top destinations for northern-lights tourism, Arctic expedition cruising, and polar-region scientific research. The city sits at 69° 40′ N, roughly 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, making TOS one of the world's northernmost airports with scheduled widebody-capable infrastructure and regular international service. A single 2,450 m (8,041 ft) asphalt runway on Tromsøya Island, just 5 km from the city center, supports approximately 71 routes to 43 destinations via 20 airlines. SAS and Norwegian Air Shuttle anchor domestic trunk service to Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim; Widerøe operates its characteristically dense Dash 8 regional network linking TOS to small communities throughout Finnmark, Troms, and the Svalbard stepping-stone at Longyearbyen. International service has grown rapidly with winter seasonal flights from London (Norwegian and Jet2), Amsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Paris (Air France), Zurich (Edelweiss), Stockholm (SAS), Helsinki (Finnair), and intermittent Eastern European winter charter operations. Tromsø is also a strategic military aviation point — the Royal Norwegian Air Force's Bodø base lies to the south, and NATO exercises regularly use TOS facilities. The airport is a critical logistics hub for the Norwegian research vessel Kronprins Haakon, the Norwegian Polar Institute, and UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, which together make Tromsø the administrative capital of Norwegian Arctic science. A major runway extension and terminal expansion is under phased delivery. Passenger traffic reached approximately 2.3M in 2023, a record driven largely by aurora tourism, which has quadrupled since 2015.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tromsø

Public transportation

The Flybussen airport express coach runs every 20–30 minutes between the airport and central Tromsø (Radisson Blu and Scandic hotels) with a journey time of 12–15 minutes for approximately 120 NOK one way. Cheaper city bus routes 40 and 42 (run by Troms Fylkestrafikk) stop a short walk from the terminal and serve central Tromsø for around 50 NOK with an Enturcard.

Taxis & rideshare

Tromsø Taxi and Din Taxi operate 24/7 ranks directly outside Arrivals. A trip to the city center typically runs 200–300 NOK and takes 10 minutes via the Sandnessund Bridge. Rideshares (Bolt) operate in Tromsø but have limited coverage; metered taxis remain the dominant on-demand option.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, and Enterprise maintain counters inside Arrivals. Booking well ahead is essential in the aurora season (November–March), when the local fleet is often fully committed. Winter rentals automatically include studded or all-season Nordic tires; 4WD is strongly recommended for Arctic driving. A valid EEA or EU license is accepted; non-EU visitors need an International Driving Permit.
