Faa'a International Airport (PPT) is French Polynesia's only international gateway and the largest airport in the South Pacific outside Australasia. Built partly on a reclaimed coral reef on the north-west coast of Tahiti, 5 km (3 mi) from central Papeete, the facility sits at an elevation of just 5 ft (2 m) and is fringed on three sides by lagoon. A single 11,360-ft (3,463-m) asphalt runway (04/22) can accept wide-body aircraft up to the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, which serves the ultra-long-haul routes that define PPT's strategic value. The airport anchors a 55-route network to 40 destinations flown by 12 airlines (2026), linking Tahiti to Paris-Orly via Los Angeles on Air France and its home carrier Air Tahiti Nui, plus non-stops to Auckland, Tokyo-Narita, Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu and Santiago de Chile. Domestic arm Air Tahiti connects PPT to roughly 45 Polynesian islands spread across an ocean area the size of Europe, making it one of the world's most important island-hub airports by reach-per-passenger. Opened in 1961 and named after the adjoining commune of Faa'a, the airport handles cruise-season and honeymoon traffic that drives French Polynesia's tourism economy. Current expansion works include a terminal refurbishment, new jet bridges and a lagoon-side runway safety area to accommodate projected traffic to five-plus million movements over the coming decades. Because the reef-edge runway lies between mountains and ocean, arrivals on the 04 approach deliver some of the most photographed landings in commercial aviation. PPT is owned by the French state through ADP-linked concessionaire Aéroport de Tahiti SA and was originally constructed on 180 hectares (445 acres) of dredged coral, a bold early-1960s engineering gamble that effectively gave Tahiti its first jet-capable runway and unlocked direct tourist flows from California. Pre-pandemic annual traffic peaked near 1.5 million passengers, overwhelmingly split between leisure arrivals and Polynesian intra-island travel.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Papeete

Public transportation

Le Truck and RTC public buses stop on the main RT1 coast road about 200 m (650 ft) from the terminal; Line 3 runs to central Papeete and the Vaiete market in roughly 15 minutes. Fares are paid in cash (XPF) to the driver. Service is infrequent on Sundays and after 6 PM, so travellers with checked bags usually pick another option.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue 24/7 outside arrivals. Fares are regulated by the Ministry of Transport and rise by roughly 50% between 8 PM and 6 AM, on Sundays and on public holidays. Papeete runs about 2,500 XPF (25 USD) by day; Punaauia and Moorea ferry terminal are short hops. Drivers accept XPF cash and most major cards.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Europcar and local brand Daniel Location operate desks in the arrivals hall with vehicles parked directly opposite. Tahiti's 114-km (71-mi) coast road makes self-drive a popular way to reach Papara, Teahupo'o and the Museum of Tahiti. Booking ahead is essential during the July to October high season; an International Driving Permit is required for stays beyond three months.
