Getting to the airport
Ground transport options from Djibouti City
Public transportation
No scheduled public bus or rail service links Djibouti-Ambouli to the city. The local minibus network serves central Djibouti but does not have a dedicated airport stop and is not practical for arriving international passengers. Most travelers use taxis, hotel pre-arranged transfers, or embassy/diplomatic-mission transport.
Taxis & rideshare
Taxis wait outside arrivals and are the default option for the short 4 mi (6 km) run to downtown Djibouti City (roughly 15 minutes). Fares are unmetered and must be negotiated before departure; Djiboutian francs (DJF) and, commonly, US dollars and euros are accepted. Evening rates run higher than daytime. Hotel pre-booked transfers are the preferred option for first-time visitors.
Rental cars
International rental brands including Europcar and Hertz maintain a presence at the airport, with most bookings handled through advance online reservations. A 4WD is strongly recommended for any travel outside the capital, where paved roads give way quickly to desert tracks. An International Driving Permit is typically required alongside the home-country license.
