Nuuk International Airport is the primary airport of Greenland and, since its major 2024 runway expansion, the autonomous territory's first true transatlantic gateway. Located roughly 2 mi (3 km) east of Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, the airport assumed the long-haul role previously held by Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) — a former U.S. air base 200 mi (320 km) inland that had served as Greenland's international hub since WWII simply because Nuuk's short 3,117 ft (950 m) runway could not accept jet aircraft. The extended 7,217 ft (2,200 m) asphalt runway and new terminal, both opened in November 2024, allow direct Airbus A330 and Boeing 737 MAX service from North America and Europe and represent the most consequential transport-infrastructure investment in Greenlandic history. The airport handles 17 routes across 13 destinations through 7 airlines — a modest raw number that understates its strategic weight as the air gateway to the world's largest island and an emerging Arctic geopolitical flashpoint. Air Greenland (Mittarfeqarfiit) is the dominant operator, running the flagship Copenhagen link and an expanded domestic network to Ilulissat, Sisimiut, and coastal settlements. United Airlines operates seasonal nonstop service from Newark, SAS from Copenhagen, and Icelandair via Reykjavík-Keflavík — the latter three services all directly enabled by the 2024 expansion and reflecting growing U.S. commercial, scientific, and strategic interest in Greenland. At 64 degrees north and 283 ft (86 m) elevation, the single runway 04/22 is bounded by sea and mountains, producing challenging approach profiles that require specialized crew training. The terminal, designed by Zeso Architects with KHR Architecture, handles roughly 800,000 annual passengers in its first full operating year. Nuuk's elevation of Greenland into the direct-long-haul tier is part of a broader Kalaallit Nunaat Mittarfiit (Greenland Airports) program that includes parallel expansions at Ilulissat (JAV) and Qaqortoq (JJU).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Nuuk

Public transportation

Nuuk's municipal bus operator Nuup Bussii runs Route 3 between the airport's 'Lufthavn' stop and the city center. The stop is a short walk from the terminal. Service is economical, follows a fixed schedule, and is the standard option for residents and budget travelers; however, capacity is limited and service is reduced in the evenings and on weekends.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue outside the terminal to meet arriving flights. Nuuk Taxi is the main operator. The ride into central Nuuk is short, typically 10 to 15 minutes. Fares are metered, and most vehicles accept credit cards, though carrying Danish kroner (DKK) is advisable for small operators and out-of-hours trips.

Rental cars

Local operators including Nuuk Car Rental and Sixt offer a small shared fleet, and advance booking is strongly recommended because inventory is limited and peak-season demand from cruise passengers and scientific expeditions is high. Rental cars are useful for exploring Nuuk and its immediate road network, but note that no roads connect Nuuk to any other town in Greenland — inter-settlement travel requires flights, helicopters, or coastal vessels.
