Esenboga International Airport serves Ankara, the capital of Turkey, and sits 17 mi (28 km) northeast of the city on the Central Anatolian plateau at 3,125 ft (953 m) elevation — one of the highest major Turkish airports, behind only Van and Erzurum. ESB handles 167 routes across 84 destinations through 15 airlines, and although overshadowed by Istanbul's twin giants at IST (Istanbul International) and SAW (Sabiha Gokcen), it remains one of the five busiest airports in Turkey and the principal political-travel gateway for a capital metropolitan region of roughly 5.7M people, including the government ministries, parliament, and foreign-diplomatic missions. Turkish Airlines operates ESB as a secondary hub, with AJet (the group's low-cost arm) and Pegasus maintaining substantial bases. Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Austrian, KLM, Iran Air, flydubai, Saudia, Azerbaijan Airlines, Kuwait Airways, and Aeroflot provide the backbone of international service, concentrated on Frankfurt, Doha, Vienna, Amsterdam, Tehran, Dubai, Jeddah, Baku, and Moscow corridors. The route network leans heavily toward Turkish domestic (Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Trabzon, Van, Adana, Gaziantep, Dalaman, Bodrum) and Central Asian and Middle Eastern destinations that reflect Ankara's diplomatic role as a gateway to the Turkic-speaking Central Asian republics. Widebody operations are dominated by Turkish Airlines 787 and A330 flights on trunk routes. Two parallel asphalt runways — 03L/21R and 03R/21L, both at 12,303 ft (3,750 m) — enable independent simultaneous operations and support any civil aircraft currently in service, with altitude-performance margin even in hot summer conditions. The main terminal, a 2006-opened TAV-designed building that has won multiple international architecture awards, combines international and domestic traffic under a distinctive steel-and-glass wave roof. An integrated high-speed rail link from downtown Ankara is under planning. ESB's elevation and continental-steppe climate mean winter operations routinely involve de-icing and occasional weather diversions — unusual for Turkish coastal airports but standard here, with snow accumulation common between December and February.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ankara

Public transportation

Havas operates frequent airport shuttle coaches to Ankara's AŞTİ intercity bus terminal (via Kizilay Square) roughly every 30 minutes from 03:30 to 00:30; journey time is 45–55 minutes and fare TRY 145. The municipal BelkoAir Line 442 follows a similar route at a lower fare (TRY 55–70) with slightly less frequency and standard urban bus seating. Both services depart from stops directly outside the arrivals terminal. There is no direct rail link, though a high-speed rail connection is in planning.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis (Esenboga Taksi) queue 24/7 outside the arrivals halls of both the domestic and international terminal sections and operate on metered fares. Typical trips run TRY 500–700 to central Ankara / Kizilay (35–50 min), TRY 650–850 to Cankaya and diplomatic districts, and TRY 400–550 to Sincan. A night surcharge (+50%) applies from midnight to 06:00. Uber and BiTaksi operate via app with similar pricing.

Rental cars

Major international agencies — Avis, Budget, Sixt, Enterprise, Hertz, Europcar — and Turkish operators Garenta, Cizgi, and Economy have desks in the arrivals hall, with vehicles in the adjacent parking structure. Advance online booking is recommended for better rates. An International Driving Permit is accepted alongside the home-country license for stays under six months; a credit card is required for the security deposit.
